Berlin : A former German military leader strongly criticized NATO’s policy towards Russia over the Caucasus conflict, the Cologne-based Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger newspaper reported Saturday. The ex-head of the planning staff at the German Defense Ministry, Ulrich Weisser warned that the western military alliance was steering towards a confrontation with Russia as a result of the Georgian problem.
“The hardliners in NATO, headed by the US, have for the time being pushed for calling off the meetings of the NATO-Russia Council,” wrote Weisser in a commentary for the Koelner Stadt-Anzeiger.
“The US, Great Britain, Poland and the Baltics have directed the pact (NATO) on a dangerous course which augurs ill for Europe,” he added.
A former high-ranking NATO official, Weisser stressed Russia was needed to help resolve important conflicts like in the Balkan region and the Near and Middle East as well as in terms of energy security.
Russia remains a vital energy provider for Europe.
