New Delhi : More than 65,000 children in municipal primary schools of the national capital have been found anemic during surveys conducted by the Municipal Corporation Delhi (MCD) in association with prominent city hospitals.
As part of its anemia control program, medical teams of the civic body carried out hemoglobin tests among students of MCD schools in five zones of the city in collaboration with Fortis Hospital, SRL Ranbaxy and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital.
Some 32,890 children studying in municipal primary schools in Shahdara North Zone, 18,820 of Shahdara South Zone, 7,239 of West Zone, 4,200 of South Zone and 2,311 children of Central Zone were found anemic, Indian official media reported quoting MCD Public Health Committee Chairman V K Monga.
He said iron and folic acid tablets have been given to all the 65,460 children.
One million tablets have been distributed so far, Monga said adding, the parents of these children were also advised to ensure that children take the medicines regularly and appropriate diet was provided to them.
He said that 756 school teachers in these five zones have been provided training on anemia control.
MCD will initiate this program in Karol Bagh, City and Sadar Paharganj zones shortly.
