Washington : Immunity for the US troops is key in the joint accord for their future status in Iraq.
The Washington Post says that even Secretary of States Condoleezza Rice failed to surpass the divergences herself in Baghdad.
According to journalist Karen De Young, the Iraqis insist to reject the immunity but admit to be close to signing the pact to set a deadline for US withdrawal, tentatively by 2011.
After the meeting with Rice, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said they are close to reach an accord and noted its weight for the US when the UN mandate in Iraq expires by year’s end.
US efforts to secure permanent presence in Iraq, owner of the third largest world oil reserve and a strategic geographic location, has hit the news lately.
The Pentagon has some 144,000 militaries deployed in Iraq and admits the death of 4,100.
