An article published by Granma newspaper entitled “The Farce,” states the trial against the Five, as they are universally known, was one of the longest in the history of that country.

Rene Gonzales, Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labanino and Antonio Guerrero are serving harsh sentences in US jails since September 1998.

Their “crime” was gathering information about terrorist plots by anti-Cuban organizations in Miami, Florida, in an effort to prevent the deaths of Cuban and even United States citizens.

The case questioned issues of foreign policy and anti-terrorism and involved 74 witnesses, 43 from the attorney”s office and 31 from the defense.

Testimony came from generals, an admiral and a White House adviser who noted that Cuba was not a danger for that northern country.

The document states that the trial against the Five should have been an event for massive media attention, but was kept secret and only covered by the biased Miami press.
