Colombo : Supersonic fighter jets of the Sri Lankan Air Force Friday bombed suspected Tamil Tiger targets in northern Wanni region, where advancing government troops are locked in fierce fighting with the rebels, defence officials here said.
Fighter jets conducted two air raids targeting a Sea Tiger training base and a mortar launching pad between 11.30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the rebel-held Wanni region, said air force spokesperson Group Captain Janaka Nanayakkara.
Though details of the damage suffered by the rebels were not immediately available, the pilots had confirmed that the targets were accurately hit, he added.
There was no immediate reaction from the rebels in this regard.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam peace secretariat in a statement Friday accused the government troops of activating a roadside claymore mine and killing two civilians in the rebel-held Wanni area Thursday.
“A farmer and a boy were killed in a claymore attack by the Sri Lanka army in Olumadhu in Nedunkerni on Thursday,” the rebel statement said, adding that most of the residents of Nedunkerni had been displaced as a result of ongoing fighting.
“The motorbike on which the pair was travelling came under the claymore attack as they were bringing vegetables to the market. Most of the people from Nedunkerni have already displaced; however, few farmers remain hoping to harvest the produce for which they have already invested heavily,” it said.
Military sources here denied the LTTE’s latest accusation as “baseless”.
