The State Council’s Development Research Center (DRC) said on its website that reports that Wu, 78, had been spying for the US were unfounded.

The DRC said Wu was highly respected in academic circles for his innovative ideas and bold arguments.

Some media reports have said that Wu was arrested for diverting economic intelligence to US agencies.

Wu has been a regular visiting scholar to prestigious US institutions like Massachusettes Institute of Technology and the universities at Yale and Stanford during the 1980s and 1990s.
