According to IRNA Political Desk reporter, the head of Ayatollah Sistani’s office Hamed al-Khifaf added in an interview with IRNA, “The Grand Ayatollah’s viewpoint on the matter is what his representative in Holy Karbala declared at this week’s Friday prayers sermon.” Al-Khifaf added, “Despite the approval of the Iraqi Parliament, Ayatollah Sistani’s authentic viewpoint on the US-Iraqi security pact is what his representative in Karbala has declared.

Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s representative in Karbala, Hojjatoleslam Seyyed Ahmad Safi, announced in his Friday prayers sermon that although the security pact was approved at the Iraqi National Parliament with the votes of the majority, it also had opponents, which is why the Iraqi nation should in a nationwide referendum decide the final fate of that pact.
