New Delhi : The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Wednesday rubbished reports that India’s hosting of the 2010 edition of Commonwealth Games is in danger due to frequent terror attacks in the country.
“At no stage has there been discussion about us moving the Games from Delhi, nor has any other city been approached to be on stand-by as has been intimated in some recent media reports,” Commonwealth Games president Michael Fennell said in a statement.
Fennell said the CGF is working closely with the Delhi Commonwealth Games Organising Committee to ensure proper security for the event.
“The CGF constantly monitors security arrangements for the Games, wherever they may be held.
“The Federation has been working with, and will continue to work with the appropriate authorities and agencies within the Government of India, the Delhi Government and the Organising Committee, to ensure that appropriate security arrangements are in place so that the Commonwealth’s athletes can compete in a safe and secure environment,” he said.
“This ongoing work with the authorities in India will continue throughout the preparations and delivery of the Games, with security arrangements modified from time to time as may prove necessary,” Fennell said.
Fennell, also offered his condolences to the relatives of the victims of the tragic Mumbai attacks.
“The senseless and brutal attacks by terrorists in Mumbai have left us all in a state of shock and our immediate concern is for our friends and their families in India, indeed around the Commonwealth, who have lost so much,” he said.
