London : A Jordanian neurologist who participated in a failed bomb attack on Glasgow airport led by Indian engineering student Kafil Ahmed was too studious to have been a terrorist, his lawyer says.
Dr Mohammed Asha, who was in a burning explosives-laden Jeep that Kafil Ahmed tried to drive into Glasgow airport last year, has been accused of involvement in the terrorist plot along with Bilal Abdulla, an Iraqi doctor who was also in the car.
But lawyer Stephen Kamlish claimed in Woolwich Crown Court Wednesday that Kafil’s brother Sabeel, who lives in Bangalore after being deported from Britain, had more contact with Abdulla and Kafil than did Asha.
While Ahmed died of burn wounds in hospital, Sabeel was deported to India after a judge ruled he was not an extremist.
Kamlish told the jury that extremist material was found on both Sabeel Ahmed’s and Asha’s laptops, and both gave money to Kafeel and Abdulla.
“Kafeel and Sabeel are brothers so he (Asha) is friendly with both Bilal Abdulla and Kafeel Ahmed,” Kamlish said.
“We know that Mohammed Asha is not friends with Kafeel Ahmed because Kafeel does not like him, probably because he’s a swot (a brainy and studious person). Not the sort of person he wants in his conspiracy.”
“There’s more evidence against this non-conspirator (Sabeel) than there is against Mohammed Asha,” he said.
Sabeel was jailed in Britain but before his deportation in May a judge noted that an emailed confession sent by Kafeel was received by Sabeel only after the Glasgow attack.
“It is clear you did not receive it until afterwards. Having opened the document on the website and realising your brother had been involved in a very serious offence, you kept that to yourself rather than going to the authorities. I accept there is no sign of you being an extremist or party to extremist views,” the judge said.
