Kolkata : A 24-year-old man who lost his job after the factory he worked in closed down apparently due to the global economic slowdown, killed his new-born son as he found it difficult to cope with the crisis, the police said.
Kanai Mondal lost his job Nov 30 owing to the recession in the paper-packet-making business. He attempted suicide the same day by consuming phenyl but was saved by timely medical support.
After returning from the hospital, he further had a life full of miseries. He ate only one meal a day and later surrendering to poverty, killed his three-day-old boy.
“Mondal choked his boy to death around 3.30 a.m. Sunday at his residence in Sonagar. He was arrested in the morning,” a senior police official at Gosaba police station said. The incident took place at Sonagar village in West Bengal’s South 24-Parganas.
Mondal, who was crying profusely at the police station, said: “I just lessened the pains of my child. I had no means to feed him or arrange for a good life for him. As it is my life has become a hell, so why include him in the pains too?”
