China sentences two to death for pre-Olympics terror attack

Beijing : China’s topmost court Wednesday confirmed the death sentence awarded to two people for killing 17 people in an attack in the northwestern province of Xinjiang last August.

The Intermediate People’s Court in Xinjiang gave the death sentence against the two terrorists who had carried out an attack Aug 4 on a group of policemen killing 17 people and injuring more than 15 – four days before the start of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Abdurahman Azat, 33, and Kurbanjan Hemit, 28, both residents of Kashgar area of the province, were convicted of homicide and illegally possessing guns, ammunition and explosives, the Supreme People’s Court in Beijing said.

According to police, 82 suspected terrorists have been arrested and five terror groups have been smashed in the province in the first half of this year.
