Caracas : A Venezuelan court has sentenced two people to 10 years in prison for planting explosives near the US embassy in Caracas in 2006 that failed to explode, the EFE news agency reported Sunday.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the two, Jose Rojas and Teodoro Darnott, were convicted for plotting to “create a climate of terror, harm to society and national upheaval”.
The two planted the explosives, termed as “sound boxes” in the case file, near the embassy in October 2006 with an intention to blow up the building to vent thier anger against the US.
Rojas was nabbed in Caracas just after leaving the explosives near the embassy building, while Darnott, the mastermind, was held later in Maracaibo, 800 km west of Caracas.
The attorney general’s office said that both the convicts are followers of Islam who had plans to place explosives at strategic points across the country.
