Medal-winning Haryana sportsmen appointed police officers

Chandigarh : Four sportsmen from Haryana, who won medals in international competitions, were Tuesday appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) in the Haryana police by the state government.

The decision to appoint the four sportsmen as DSPs was taken at a meeting of the Haryana cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

The beneficiaries include international boxers Vijender Kumar, Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar and wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, all belonging to Haryana.

While Vijender won a bronze medal in the Beijing Olympics this year, the other two boxers reached the quarterfinals in the same Olympics. They also brought medals for India in the just concluded world boxing championships in China’s Zhe Jiang province.

The Haryana police had earlier appointed Indian women’s hockey team captain Mamta Kharab, men’s hockey player Sardar Singh, Indian T-20 cricket team member Joginder Sharma and woman wrestler Geetika Jakhar as DSPs.
