Berlin : German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier discussed on the phone the latest developments in the escalating Gaza conflict with European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg whose country will hold the rotating EU presidency on January 1, the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
All three officials agreed on the urgent need to avoid an escalation of the violence, triggered by the Israeli air raids which have killed over 300 people, among them women and children, and injured hundreds.
Steinmeier stressed Sunday’s call by the UN Security Council on the Gaza crisis was a clear signal towards preventing a further escalation.
While Germany, a very close ally of the criminal Zionist regime, has yet to criticize the Israeli massacres in Gaza, the EU has lambasted Israeli air raids on Gaza as “unacceptable.”
“The current Israeli strikes are inflicting an unacceptable toll on Palestinian civilians and will only worsen the humanitarian crisis as well as complicate the search for a peaceful solution,” Solana said in a statement.
Solana’s remarks came hours after the French government which has the current EU’s rotating presidency until the end of the year, condemned the Israeli air attacks as “disproportionate.”
The bombardment must stop immediately, French President Nicholas Sarkozy was quoted saying in Paris.
The illegal Jewish state has faced international condemnation, especially among Muslim and Arab countries, for its savage military onslaught in Gaza.
