London : British Foreign Secretary David Miliband has called for an “immediate cease-fire” to the Gaza violence.
“The prime minister and I are following developments in Gaza with grave concern. The rise in rocket attacks on Israel since 19 December, and Saturday’s massive loss of life, make this a dangerous moment which should be of concern to the whole of the international community,” Miliband said in a statement published by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
He said that the UK supports an “urgent ceasefire” and “immediate halt” to all violence in Gaza.
Referring to the ongoing humanitarian situation in Gaza in the wake of the Israeli attacks which left thousands of Palestinians injured in hospitals, Miliband said the deteriorating humanitarian situation is ” deeply disturbing”.
He said the Israeli regime should “abide by its humanitarian obligations” regarding the situation in Gaza.
“I have discussed this unfolding crisis with my counterparts in the region and beyond. There is a clear consensus, which we support, that everything should be done to protect the political space for those leaders committed to peaceful negotiations,” he said.
More than 300 Palestinians have been killed and 800 wounded in two days of Israeli air strikes on Gaza.
