Cairo : Mohamed ElBaradei, Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived here Friday evening for talks with Egyptian officials over nuclear energy cooperation.
During his week-long visit to Egypt, ElBaradei is scheduled to meet with a number of senior officials on cooperation programs between the UN nuclear watchdog and Egypt in the field of peaceful use of nuclear energy, according to Egypt’s official MENA news agency.
The IAEA chief will also meet with the Cairo-based Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, said MENA.
Egypt has started studying over construction of its first nuclear reactor, which will be built at Dabba on the Mediterranean coast, some 160 km west of the country’s main harbor of Alexandria.
On Jan. 9, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Energy Hassan Younes said the country’s Nuclear Stations Authority has launched studies on the site chosen for constructing the Dabba nuclear station.
In October 2007, President Hosni Mubarak announced that Egypt will start a program to set up several power-generating nuclear stations to meet the country’s increasing need of energy.
