New Delhi : A city court Monday sent Uttar Pradesh mafia don Brijesh Singh, wanted in several cases of murder, to Mumbai for probe into the 1992 shooting inside a hospital there, in which two people were killed.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Jain allowed the police to take Brijesh to Mumbai for three days. The case relates to the Feb 12, 1992, J.J. Hospital shooting when some unidentified people barged into a hospital ward and opened fire on Shailesh Haldankar, a member of the Arun Gawli gang who was admitted there for treatment. Two police constables guarding Haldankar were killed in the shooting.
Singh is suspected to have worked for the Dawood Ibrahim gang till the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts.
The magistrate ordered Delhi Police to accompany the Mumbai police and ensure Singh’s presence before the principal sessions judge in Mumbai.
The court also remanded Singh in 14-day judicial custody, but rejected the prosecution’s demand for extension of the police custody, saying that Delhi Police had enough time and opportunity to interrogate him.
Uttar Pradesh Police have applied to the court for presenting Singh in a Varanasi court for other cases of murder and attempt to murder.
Brijesh was arrested in Bhubaneswar last month by a Delhi Police team after he remained in hiding for 20 years.
During police custody, Singh was taken to Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Chhattisgarh for interrogation in 23 cases against him.
