At least 9 dead and 60 injured in German apartment fire: police

Berlin : At least nine people were killed and 60 were injured in an apartment fire Sunday afternoon in the center of the southwest German city of Ludwigshafen, news reports said Monday.

Rescue workers recovered eight dead bodies, among them babies and children, while another person succumbed to his injuries, police say.

Two other people were still in critical condition.

Trapped in the fire of the building, several parents were forced to throw their children out of the window, the press cited police as saying.

The four-storey brick building was completely destroyed in the fire whose exact cause has yet to be determined.

At the time of fire, some 52 people were staying in the building which housed also a club on the ground level.
