New Delhi : INS Jalashwa, the troop carrier the Indian Navy recently acquired from the US, is not being sent back for repairs following an accident last week that killed five sailors, a top commander said Wednesday.

Indian Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Mehta also maintained that the ship, formerly the USS Trenton, had been refurbished according to the laid down specifications.

“The accident is not related to deficiencies in the refurbishment,” Mehta said while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a defence seminar here.

The Indian Navy says the accident last Friday occurred due to the leak of hydrogen sulphide gas from one of the ship’s compartments.

The accident, which also left three navy personnel seriously injured, occurred while the ship was participating in an exercise in the Bay of Bengal.

“The board of inquiry is looking into the reasons behind the high concentration of gas, where it came from and how it came. The warship has been refurbished as per our specifications and we need not say anything more on this,” Mehta maintained.
