While introducing Universal Knowledge Trust, Mohammad Mumshad, General Secretary, informed that the UKT was established more than a year back which is committed for intellectual development and promotion of knowledge and learning in backward sections of society. UKT provides scholarships in identified areas of academic and professional fields. This was second year of scholarship from the Trust. It organizes seminars and discussions on contemporary issues and publishes materials for the creation of a better-informed society.

Abdul Rashid Agwan, Director of the Trust, congratulated all the 42 selected candidates and said that though every applicant appeared to be deserving, they were shortlisted because of limited fund. The budget for scholarship was enhanced from Rs. 2.25 lacs to 2.5 lacs this year, he stated.

He was of the view that the Muslim community should become serious about their educational, economic and social backwardness as portrayed in the Sachar Committee report. Instead of relying only on the government schemes the community must come forward to ameliorate their condition. "There would be no change unless we showed eagerness and readiness for a change," he asserted.

He felt worry for very high rate of drop out among Muslim children which is mainly because of economic reasons. The rich among Muslims must take initiative to support poor students in persuing their studies. But, unfortunately, Sachar Committee report too failed to electrify the community, he viewed.

The first verse of Holy Qur’an revealed with the word ‘Iqra’ which means ‘read’ or ‘recite’. He quoted two main hadiths on learning, "Seek knowledge even if found in China" and ‘Seeking knowledge is obligatory on Muslim men and women’. These hadiths clarify the position of the tenets of Islam in education. The word used for knowledge in these hadiths is ilm, an Arabic word, which in a comprehensive manner, includes all sciences i.e. social and physical, he opined.

The Chief Guest, Khwaja M. Shahid, Joint Secretary, Union Public Service Commission and Chariman, Sir Syed Foundation viewed that the coming era will be of the Information Technology (IT). It is going to support all the fields. Various Indian and multi-national companies are waiting to welcome more and more technocrats on the basis of their talent and knowledge. Only person, equipped with knowledge, skill, talent and degree, is going to succeed in the job market.

‘Educational backwardness is a key factor responsible for the social, economic and political backwardness of the Muslim community’ was the view of Siddiq Hassan, Vice-President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind.

UKT had organized a symposium on "Sachar Committee Report: What Next?" last year wherein the findings and recommendations of Sachar Committee were discussed.
