Kabul : An Afghan civilian was killed and another wounded in fire of “warning shots” by ISAF troops in western Afghanistan, the military said here Monday.
An ISAF unit convoy in Farah province took force escalation measures when a civilian car approached their vehicle, said the statement from NATO base here in Kabul.
The statement said ISAF troops gave the driver “clear and measured warning signals”, including a warning shot in the air, to keep the car at a safe distance.
“The driver failed to heed the repeated warnings to stop. Finally, a warning shot aimed at the ground was fired” and the Afghan police later informed that two people were injured as a result.
A passenger of the car later breathed his last at a hospital in the province, said the statement.
“ISAF deeply regrets any civilian injuries or deaths,” said spokesperson Brigadier Gen. Carlos Branco.
The warning procedures followed by the ISAF troops were in accordance with rules of engagement protocols.
“We implore Afghan citizens to keep a safe distance from military vehicles and comply with warnings given in order to prevent tragedies such as this,” said General Branco.
