Colombo : Government troops battled with separatist Tamil Tigers across Sri Lanka’s embattled north, killing 22 rebels, the military said Thursday, according to AP.
Soldiers killed eight guerrillas during several clashes along the front lines in the Vavuniya region, a defense ministry official said. The fighting wounded six soldiers, the official said because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
In nearby Mannar district, soldiers attacked rebel bunkers and killed seven rebels, while in the northeastern Welioya region, seven more rebels were killed, the official said.
The new deaths reported Thursday brought the overall toll in fighting Wednesday to 39 killed, including two soldiers, according to the military.
There was no immediate comment from the rebels.
