African energy experts meet in Algeria

Algiers : Energy experts in the African Union (AU) member countries were meeting here Friday to discuss plans of the African energy committee, and to prepare for AU energy ministers’ meeting, due on February 17.

The experts will discuss in their closed-door meetings a report by the executive manager of the energy committee, which is in its interim phase.

Algerian director of energy in ministry of energy and mining, Mustafa Huneifi told reporters on sidelines of the meeting that the energy committee would be tasked with developing energy in the African continent.

Huneifi said Africa was producing nine million barrels of oil per day (bpd) but was only consuming three million bpd.

Hussein Al-Haj, the energy committee deputy executive manager, said in press remarks the meeting would discuss energy integration projects which would be referred to the ministers.

He said the committee would work on providing appropriate environment for African countries to develop nuclear energy for peaceful means.

The committee was formed during the African summit in 2001.
