Bihar, Chandigarh in hockey semis

Hyderabad : It was a day of golden goals as Bihar edged out Jharkhand 3-2 and Chandigarh Academy overcame Punjab 2-1 in extra-time en route to the semi-finals of the 4th junior boys (under-18) National Hockey Championship here Friday.

Binay Bhengra scored the match-winner in extra time as Bihar saw off Jharkhand’s spirited challenge in a well-contested match that ended 2-2 at the end of the regulation period.

Deepak Kujur and Anup Toppo scored for Bihar while Jagarnath Oron and Anil Xaxa scored one apiece as Jharkhand kept pace with their rivals.

Meanwhile, Chandigarh Academy and Punjab tied 1-1 at the end of 70 minutes during which Harmandeep Singh (Chandigarh) and Jaswinder Singh (Punjab) scored. In the extra-time, Harvinder Singh’s golden goal helped Chandigarh to advance to the round of four.

In another quarter-final, Andhra continued their strong run in the tournament defeating Tamil Nadu 2-1 with goals by Praveen and Rama Krishnan. For Tamil Nadu, Albert John scored their only goal.

Completing the semi-final line-up were Steel Authority of India (SAIL) who defeated Mumbai 2-0 with goals by Amardeep Ekka and Jero Lakra.

In the semi-finals to be played on Sunday after a day’s break, Andhra meet Chandigarh Academy while SAIL take on Bihar.
