New Delhi : The Election Commission Friday served notice to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on a disqualification complaint against her for receiving a Belgian honour in 2006.
The three-member commission, headed by Chief Election Commission N. Gopalaswami, asked the Congress president to respond within three weeks.
The poll panel has asked the external affairs ministry to furnish details within the same time about the Order of Leopold the Belgium government gave her in November 2006, commission sources said.
An advocate from Kerala had sought the Congress leader’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha for accepting the honour, which he said amounted to owing allegiance to the constitution of that country.
Earlier, the three-member commission could not arrive at a conclusion on whether to issue notice to Gandhi or not.
The poll panel had by a 2-1 vote decided to issue her a notice on Wednesday.
