Islamabad : The Federal Cabinet urged the people to participate fully in the general elections next Monday and assured them of the government’s firm resolve to maintain law and order at all costs to enable peaceful and orderly polling.
Addressing a meeting of the Cabinet Saturday, Prime Minister Mohammedmain Soomro said the caretaker government was fully committed to the electoral process and no one will be allowed to disturb peace or attempt to sabotage the democratic process.
The government, he said, will extend all possible assistance and facilitation as required by the Election Commission in the conduct of the polls on February 18.
He referred to the massive deployment of law enforcement agencies and contingents of the Pakistan Army across the country and expressed the confidence that their presence would ensure peace and order not only on the election day but the days following the polls.
The Prime Minister appealed to fellow Pakistanis to demonstrate to the world their love for democracy and their faith in democratic values and democratic practices by their exemplary conduct on the election day.
He welcomed the presence of a very large number of foreign observers as well as the foreign media and said the government would extend them every possible cooperation in their monitoring and coverage of the elections.
The Federal Cabinet approved in principle, the establishment of the National Commission for Human Rights on a proposal by the Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney.
The Human Rights Division is already preparing the necessary enabling legislation to facilitate the establishment of the Commission. This underscores the commitment of the government and the people of Pakistan to the protection and promotion of human rights in the country.
