Malaysia: manufacturing sales value for December 2007 up 10.6 percent

Kuala Lumpur : Sales value of the manufacturing sector posted a double-digit growth of 10.6 percent or RM4.6 billion to RM47.61 billion in December 2007 compared with RM43.03 billion in December 2006. (rm 1=0.3105 usd)

The sales value rose by 3.4 percent or RM1.6 billion as against RM46.0 billion reported in November 2007, according to the Statistics Department.

The increase in sales value in December 2007 as compared with the corresponding month of 2006 was attributed to the rise in refined petroleum products, 33.5 percent or RM2,341.8 million to RM9,338.9 million from RM6,997.1 million, the department said in a statement Monday.

Parts and accessories for motor vehicles and their engines rose 26.7 percent or RM103.6 million (to RM491.4 million from RM387.8 million) and other chemical products went up 26.4 percent or RM181.8 million to RM870.3 million from RM688.4 million), it added.

The department said total paid employees engaged in the manufacturing sector was 1,101,394 persons, an increase of 16,823 persons (1.6 percent) from 1,084,571 persons employed in December 2006.

However, total employees in December 2007 went down 0.3 percent or 3,735 persons compared to 1,105,129 persons in the previous month.

Salaries and wages paid in December 2007 increased by RM136.5 million or 6.4 percent compared with RM2,134.1 million spent in the previous year, the department said.

The total amount paid in December 2007 was 10.7 percent or RM218.6 million higher than RM2,052.0 million spent in November 2007, it said.

For the year 2007, the manufacturing sector registered a cumulative sales value worth RM523.8 billion, up by 2.6 percent or RM13.1 billion over RM510.7 billion registered a year ago, the department said.

Total salaries and wages paid out to employees in the sector for the comparative period also rose by 7.0 percent or RM1.6 billion to RM24.4 billion as compared with RM22.8 billion disbursed in 2006, it added.
