The robbers entered the home in Anarwali Colony in the busy by-lanes of old Delhi Monday evening as 10-year-old domestic help Ehsaan opened the door to their knock.

They immediately overpowered him and his employer Khatoon Begam, 42, showing them a knife – there was nobody else at home then. They tied their hands and ransacked the cupboards.

Police said the robbers decamped with Rs.1 million in cash and gold worth Rs.1.5 million. The victim’s neighbours did not get wind of the incident as the house is located at the far end of the colony.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi) Devesh Srivastva said the victims’ hands were not tied properly and they soon managed to get free.

“Khatoon Begam called her husband Allauddin on his mobile phone. At that time he was at his motor-winding shop in Mayapuri (southwest Delhi). Her husband reached home and informed us nearly two hours after the incident,” Srivastva said.

Police said vital evidence was recovered suggesting involvement of some insiders.

Srivastva said Khatoon Begam and the domestic help were in a state of shock after the incident.

“We will try to draw the sketches of the robbers, when the victims are fit to make a statement,” he said.
