Media reports quoting sources said the security personnel on gas-operated boats, fitted with automatic guns, opened fire at the fishermen who fled the area on Thursday. They were engaged in fishing within the territorial areas of India, the sources claimed.

According to sources, Sri Lankan ferry operators also dropped three refugees at an islet, Rameswaram in the sea. They were rescued by the Indian fishermen.

The refugees have paid Rs 24,000 as ferry charges. They were shifted to Mandapam transit camp after initial enquiries, the sources added.
