Jakarta : An earthquake with magnitude of 6.5 rocked Bengkulu province of Sumatra Island Sunday, but there was no potential for tsunami, the meteorology agency said here.
The quake struck at 21:46 local time (1446 GMT) with the epicentre 151 km northwest of Muko Muko town of Bengkulu province and at 57 km under sea bed, Beny H., an official of the agency, said.
“We do not issue tsunami warning, as the quake is not potential for tsunami,” he told Xinhua.
The official said the quake was felt in the whole province and nearby province of West Sumatra.
The agency was trying to confirm the intensity of the quake, according to the official.
Twenty-three people were killed and thousands of buildings were destroyed in September 2007 after a 7.9 Richter scale quake rocked Bengkulu province in Sumatra Island.
Indonesia is laid at a vulnerable zone so called “the Pacific Ring of Fire” where two continental plates, stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia, meet, causing frequent volcanic movements.
