New Delhi : Jyoti Randhawa continued his upward climb in world golf rankings with a fine second place finish in the SAIL Open Golf 2008 presented by Jaypee Greens over the weekend that saw him rise to 77th.
Randhawa, who is now the highest ranked Indian in world rankings, moved up from previous week’s 82nd place.
Jeev Milkha Singh, the top Indian since the middle of 2006, but who dropped to second behind Randhawa last month, is now 86th. Indo-Swede Daniel Chopra who began the season in 120th place is now 66th.
Randhawa is up next to play the Johnnie Walker Classic, Maybank Malaysian Open and Ballantines Championships in Korea, all three events sanctioned by Asian and European Tours. In case he does well and gets into top-50, it will give him a spot in the Majors later in the year.
Other top Indians are S.S.P. Chowrasia (163rd), Gaurav Ghei (228), Shiv Kapur (270), Arjun Atwal (378) and Rahil Gangjee (406). Gaganjeet Bhullar (519) and Digvijay Singh (524) are the other Indians among the top-40 Asians in world ranking.
The top Asian continues to be Korean K.J. Choi at sixth, while Randhawa at 77th is the next best.
The world’s top player continues to be Tiger Woods, who over the weekend won the WGC-Accenture Matchplay championships for fourth successive win on the PGA Tour and the seventh in last eight starts. Woods has now won his last five events, including the Dubai Desert Classic, which is an event on European Tour. The WGC-Accenture Matchplay championships was also his 64th PGA Tour win that puts him fourth in the all-time list.
