Washington : US President George W. Bush has said that the US envoy’s mission to the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) is to “explain the truth about America”, and repair “misperceptions”.
Bush appointed Sada Cumber as the first US envoy to the OIC, in an effort to clean up the tarnished US image in the Muslim world. “There’s a lot of misperceptions about America, and Sada is going to be part of our effort to explain the truth,” Bush said.
“The core of his mission is to explain to the Islamic world that America is a friend,” he said, describing Cumber as “a very successful businessman, a person who knows the Islamic world.”
“We’ve got work to do in certain areas,” Bush said.
Cumber, an Austin-based technology entrepreneur, is chairman and chief executive officer of a global imaging company SozoTek.
He will be among the 57 nations represented at the second-largest international organisation, which advocates Islamic values in both social and political realms.
Bush announced that he would send a special envoy to the OIC in June 2007, when he attended the 50th anniversary ceremony of the Islamic Centre, a mosque and cultural centre in Washington DC.
