Satyapragyan lone Indian to win sixth round at Hastings chess

Hastings : Swayangs Satyapragyan was the lone Indian to score a win in the sixth round of the Hastings Congress Chess tournament, as the other two Indians in a field, Saptarishi Roy Chowdhury and Deep Sengupta were both held to draws in their games.

The 26-year-old Satyapragyan, rated 2404, beat former Bangladesh junior national champion, Mehdi Hasan to take his tally to four points from six games. He is half a point behind the big group of 10 players, who head the field with 4.5 points after six rounds.

Meanwhile, Roy Chowdhury was held to a draw by German Falko Bindrich and Deep Sengupta, playing with white, drew with David Ledger of England.

In the seventh round, Roy Chowdhury (2447) will have black against Peter Marusenko (2304), while Simon Knott (2366) has white against Satyapragyan (2404) and Deep Sengupta (2447) will have white against Mark Huizer (2201). In each case the Indians are higher rated and will therefore be fancied to take full points.

Meanwhile as many as 10 players are sharing the lead. They are Vadim Malakhatko, Bogdan Lalic, Nicholas Pert, Bor Chatalbashev, Nidjat Mamedov, Andrew Greet, Simon Williams, Valeriy Neverov, Stuart Conquest and Mark Hebden.
