New Delhi : The family of a retired army officer, who was murdered by unidentified assailants a few days ago, has agreed to donate his organs to a soldier and a 14-year-old, an army statement released here Sunday said.
Unidentified assailants shot Brigadier (retd) Y.P. Bakshi in head at his residence in Shastri Nagar in Meerut Jan 4.
He was brought to the Army Research and Referral Hospital here after the shooting and was declared brain dead Saturday evening. The family of the slain officer agreed to donate the organs so that they could give new lease of life to the needy, the statement said.
According to Maj. Gen. O.P. Mathew, commandant of the hospital, the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA) coordinated the operation with active cooperation from Jagdish Prasad, medical superintendent of Safdarjang Hospital.
Surgical teams at army hospital worked in tandem to transplant the liver into a serving soldier with cirrhosis and one kidney into a 14-year-old. The second kidney, cornea and heart valves have been stored for use for needy recipients, the release said.
