He said here Thursday that the Lebanese opposition did not “oppose” the Arab relevant initiative. “Efforts are intensified to get out of the current predicament, that does not need a miracle, especially a consensus candidate has already been agreed upon,” Moussa told reporters following talks with Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir.

However, it is not normal that an agreement on the candidate has been concluded and still dispute continues on how he should be elected, Moussa said. “Why should the presidency seat in Lebanon left a vacuum?”

The Arab League Chief noted that the Arab initiative to settle the presidential dispute in Lebanon could not be “partitioned” and that it does not require interpretation but “an agreement and accord spirit.”

“Those seeking Lebanon’s interests will easily understand the initiative.”

Moussa hoped that his talks would bear fruits saying that Patriarch Sfeir, as usual, did not oppose the Arab initiative to settle the presidential dispute. This also applies to Parliament Speaker Nabi Berri.

Moussa expressed hope that the new president would be elected during Saturday’s parliament session.

The decision taken by the extraordinary meeting for the Arab Foreign Ministers in Cairo earlier this week was based on “the immediate election of a president and forming a government in line with the Lebanese constitution.”

Asked if he thought he could convince the Lebanese opposition with the items on the initiative, Moussa said he did not “see any opposition from the opposition.”

He further said if he could gather MP Saad Al-Hrair, leader of the Future Movement, and MP Michel Aoun, leader of Free Patriotic Front (FPM) with presidency candidate General Michel Suleiman, Moussa said it was a good idea and could be realised.

The Arab League secretary-general carries on with his talks with the Lebanese leaders which he started on arrival in Beirut on Wednesday when he met with Berri, Prime Minister Fuad Siniora and Al-Hariri.

Earlier Thursday, he met with Lebanon’s Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Rasheed Qabbani and will meet with Aoun and Hezbollah leaders.
