The rebels detonated an explosive device and opened fire on a government unit on the road to Rudop village, in Chanae district, ANT reported.

The soldiers were patrolling the area when a 20 man contingent detonated the bomb with its vehicle.

Over 2600 people in that Thai southern region have died violent deaths since the separatist movement resumed the armed struggle on January 2004.

Attacks with light weapons and bombs take place every day in the three provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, of Muslim majority, despite the deployment of over 30,000 soldiers and declaration of a state of emergency in those provinces.
