Musharraf, Solana discuss EU-Pakistan ties

Brussels : European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana met Pakistani President Parvez Musharraf here Monday afternoon and discussed the internal situation in Pakistan, terrorism EU-Pakistani ties and Afghanistan.

Solana told reporters after the meeting that they held “very good and frank” exchange of views.

“We wish that Pakistan has free and fair elections on the path of reform,” he said.

“The fight against terrorism is fundamental not only for Pakistan but for the stability of the region, stressed Solana.

On EU-Pakistan ties, Solana said we have to wait for the outcome of the elections and the government that will be in place to see how we move forward.

On his part, Musharraf said there was “total unanimity of views” and Pakistan understands the significance of the role of the EU in the future and in political disputes around the world.

On bilateral side, Musharraf said he raised the issue of market access to Pakistani goods into the EU.

“We need to sustain our economic growth,” he said.

“There is a commitment from the Pakistani side ..that our fight against terrorism and extremism will continue with all our resolve and determination,” he stressed, Later, Musharraf was to meet NATO chief Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and address the European Parliament.

The Pakistani President arrived in Belgium Sunday on the first-leg of a four-nation European tour that will ALSO take him to France, the UK and Switzerland.
