Youth nabbed for killing two in Mumbai road accident

Mumbai : A youth has been arrested for killing two people and injuring five in a road accident in north Mumbai while he was driving his car in a drunken condition, the police said Monday.

According to senior police inspector Rolphi P. Pereira, Sanket Ashok Sonawane, 23, was drunk while driving the Fiat Palio, which hit a group of seven pedestrians in the suburban commercial hub, Bandra-Kurla Complex, late Sunday night.

“He studies in the third year B.Com at the Poddar College. His father is an executive engineer with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation at its Kennedy Bridge office,” Pereira told IANS.

Sanket was also caught and prosecuted for drunken driving by the Mumbai police in March 2005 and was then fined Rs.1,000.

Police officials said that the pedestrians were scouting for an auto rickshaw when the speeding car hit them.

“Gale Jason Almeida, 36, and Martha Toharamudi, 35, died in the Baba Hospital, whereas the remaining five have sustained injuries,” said Pereira.

Martha’s daughters Ratna Kumari, 12, and Vijay Kumari, 15, have sustained minor injuries. While Elizabeth Yellamelly, 30, sustained serious head injury and a leg fracture, Paul Raj Abhraham, 41, and David Nadar, 26, managed to escape with minor injuries.
