The SC yesterday refrained from issuing a stay on the High Court order that stalled the trial of Hasina, Bangladeshs leading English daily The Daily Star reported Tuesday. Last week, the military-backed caretaker government had moved a petition in the SC seeking permission to appeal against the January 17 high court orders in the case in which Hasina, her younger sister Sheikha Rehana and cousin Sheikh Selim are accused of extorting around USD 500,000 from a Bangladesh businessman.

The case was filed last year by Azam J Chowdhury, managing director of East Coast Trading Pvt Ltd, a private power company in Bangladesh.

Hasina was Bangladesh PM during 1996-2001 and is the chief of the Awami League – the country’s largest political party. She was taken into custody last year as part of interim government’s anti-graft drive.
