“Given the magnitude of the crime, the government should immediately take initiatives for a CBI inquiry into what appears to be a globally organised racket of human organs. The busting of the racket could just be the tip of an iceberg,” IMA secretary general S.N. Mishra told IANS.

Police arrested a surgeon and four associates Thursday night from a house in Haryana’s Gurgaon district where the kidney racket was being run. Four doctors allegedly involved in the racket made over 600 poor people part with their kidneys.

Mishra said the IMA would initiate an inquiry to find out whether the guilty doctors were members of the association. “We will take away their membership for committing such a heinous crime.”

Police Friday detained two patients, Joy Mathewal, 53, an American NRI, and Heleni Kitroki, also 53, from Greece, who had come to receive kidneys.

“It is extremely condemnable to trade in human organs in blatant violation of established norms. Human organs can only be acquired through voluntary donation and that too from the government or government-approved organ banks,” Mishra said.

“The government should immediately come out with norms for running nursing homes and hospitals.”

The alleged kingpin of the racket, Amit Kumar, a surgeon, is absconding. The police are looking for two other doctors: Saraj Kumar and Jeewan Kumar. The arrested doctor is Upendra Kumar.
