The police said Baishaki Devi found the wooden statue Monday evening, when she was taking her animals to a field for grazing.

The wooden statue, said to be centuries old, has been reinstalled in the church.

According to the police, the 18-inch statue was stolen from Dhori Colliery of Bokaro district, around 160 km from here Sunday.

The priest said he informed the police after the statue was found missing Sunday morning.

The Bokaro police had announced a cash award for anyone who could give information about the stolen statue.

“We will reward the woman who found the statue. Because of the police pressure the thieves hid the statue in the bushes,” said Anurag Gupta, deputy inspector general of police, Bokaro range.

The local Christian community has expressed their happiness for the recovery of the statue.
