Kabul : A deputy provincial governor and five more people were killed in a suicide blast inside a mosque in southern Afghanistan on Thursday.
The bomber blew himself inside a mosque in Lashkargah, capital of the country’s southern Helmand province when people were busy praying.
Pir Mohammad was among the six people killed in the huge blast, police chief of the province Mohammad Hussain Andiwal confirmed to KUNA over the telephone.
According to Andiwal, the blast happened around 1:00pm (local time). He said five civilians were killed and eighteen more sustained injuries.
Earlier, officials in the province had confirmed the blast, but they were reluctant to confirm if the deputy governor was also among those killed in the attack. This was the second blast in Afghanistan in the day. Earlier, a bus carrying Defence Ministry’s officials were targeted in the central capital Kabul. While locals said it was a suicide blast, security officials on the spot said the explosives were blown up with the help of a remote-controlled device. Taliban, who usually assert responsibility for such attacks, so far did not issue any comment.
