Cairo : Speaker of the Arab Interim Parliament (AIP) Mohammad Al-Saqer stressed Thursday the importance of the parliament’s meeting that would be held on Saturday to discuss implications of the Israeli siege on Gaza.
Speaking to KUNA on the sidelines of the Fifth Conference of the Parliamentary Union of Organization of the Islamic Conference Members (PUOICM), the Kuwaiti MP said, “The meeting will be dedicated to discussing the situation in Gaza,” but hinted that the Lebanese file may be touched upon should members request this.
Asked about the recent shuttle visits he made to countries of the Arab Maghreb and other Arab states, he said the aim was to seek the opinion of parliamentarians over placing the permanent charter for the Arab Parliament.
Al-Saqer also stressed the importance of activating the role of the PUOICM, noting that Muslim parliaments did not share a common view on the future of Palestine and peace in the region, and conflicted over such issues as Iraq and Lebanon, among others.
The AIP bears the responsibility of activating the PUOICM role, especially as Arab societies suffered from the same “catastrophic” crises that plagued the Muslim world, he said.
