Moscow : The Russian Federation has urged all states to join the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and to make it a comprehensive one.
The Russian Foreign ministry has called in a statement issued Tuesday, on the 40 anniversary of signing the treaty, all states “to solve all issues of contention based on the NPT.” The statement added that time has proven the importance of this treaty as a vital factor in limiting the spread of nuclear weapons, sustaining disarmament, and insuring global cooperation regarding investing in nuclear energy is further developed.
Moreover, it said that all states, with no exception, need this treaty. It also stressed the importance of the international conference which will be held in 2010 to assess the effectiveness of the treaty in preventing the spread of nuclear weapons and developing special mechanisms to achieve this goal.
