By Prensa Latina,

Washington : US Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama has won some detractors, due to his moderate stance on the war in Iraq and other issues in his domestic political agenda.

Obama, who backed the deployment of US troops at a debate during the primary elections, promised on July 3 that he would rethink his policy, after returning from a tour of the occupied territories.

His statements put people’s backs up, because part of the liberal grassroots in his campaign felt betrayed in the hope to end a conflict that has cost the country lives and resources for over five years.

Even in the Republican ranks, Candidate John McCain took advantage of the situation to note the change of mind of his rival, whom he accused of taking a 180-degree opportunistic turn in his antiwar strategy.

A few hours later, the opposition candidate denied that he had changed his mind in that regard, although he requested some flexibility for his initial promise to end the deployment of US troops 16 months after taking office, if he wins the elections.

The war is only one of the issues that the Illinois senator seems to moderate in his speeches, because a few days ago, he backed a Supreme Court ruling on the right to bear arms and rejected another ruling on the death sentence.

In addition, 16,000 of Obama’s supporters expressed opposition to the Democratic candidate’s support for a law that grants immunity to the telephone companies involved in domestic espionage, an issue on which he has also changed his mind.
