During a workshop at the Havana-based House of Friendship, the caravanistas were briefed thoroughly by Joel Queipo, a member of the Cuban Young Communists League National Bureau, who highlighted the importance to know the reality of the Cuban people and the role currently played by the country’s youth.

What started in 1999 as a national battle for the repatriation of a child (Elian Gonzalez), who was kidnapped in Miami, turned out to be a revolution within the Cuban Revolution, including several social, cultural, scientific, economic programs, among others, aimed to turn Cuban society into one of the most educated in the world.

Cuban youth became a main axis of these transformations, as benefactors and players as well, with social workers in neighbourhoods and homes detecting shortages and problems.
