Washington : The US Senate votes Tuesday on an internal spying bill to give extensive powers to the White House and immunity to communication companies that collaborate with security.

If the initiative is approved, it will give the government authority to monitor people and reinforce companies of the sector against possible demands.

Democratic Senator Russ Feingold slammed some days ago the measure, boosted by President George W. Bush.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) demanded that the Senate reject the bill.

“It would be very disappointing to see something so horrible come into effect,” said ACLU Legislative Office director in this capital Caroline Fredrickson, who urged legislators to speak out against the initiative.

According to the activist, the Senate is the last hope for those who believe in the Constitution, after the House of Representatives recently approved the project.

Among rights predicted in the law is the power from federal agencies to intercept phone calls, even without the approval of a court, and the delivery of legal immunity to telecommunication companies that support the government in its domestic security labor.
