New Delhi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh: “Our relationship with the US has never been in such good shape as it is today… And it is the intention of my government… Whether it is a question of climate change… global economy, India and the US must stand tall, stand shoulder to shoulder, and that’s what is going to happen.”
Communist Party of India-Marxist general secretary Prakash Karat: “The government has lost its majority and legitimacy. The prime minister must face the Lok Sabha and seek a vote of confidence. The struggle against the nuclear deal is not over. This struggle will continue. I am confident this deal will not be finalised.”
Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh: “The UPA should not find it difficult to get the numbers. I have no doubt that the government would get the numbers despite everything. Support is coming from unexpected quarters for the government. Even if the floor test does not happen, we will support the UPA. And if it happens, we will support the nuclear deal and we will save the government.”
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi: “We are sure that we can prove majority in the Lok Sabha. We are working on it. We will prove it.”
Finance Minister P. Chidambaram: “We strongly believe we have the support. Elections will be held as per the schedule, that is, by April or May 2009.”
Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari: “We have the numbers, and if there is a need we will prove the majority.”
