Kolkata : A day after the Left parties formally withdrew support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, around 40,000 of their activists marched through the city hub decrying the India-US civil nuclear deal and the escalating prices of essential commodities.
The colourful rally organised by the Kolkata district Left Front committee, started from the Rani Rashmani avenue and ended two kilometres away at the Moulali Rashleela Maidan.
The rallyists carried posters and festoons condemning the UPA for going ahead with the nuclear deal and demanding urgent steps for bringing down the prices.
“Control prices, rather than destroying the sovereignty and independence of the nation by signing the nuclear deal,” a festoon said.
The Left parties withdrew support to the UPA Wednesday after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s announcement that the government would go ahead with the deal.
