Kabul : The U.S.-led Coalition forces in a surprise move have raided Waigal district in the eastern Nuristan province and taken into custody all district officials after disarming them, provincial police chief Qasim Paiman said on Wednesday.
“U.S. troops entered Waigal district late Tuesday and took them into custody after disarming and collecting their cellular phones,” Paiman told Xinhua.
He also added that since then there was no contact with officials in Waigal district.
The police chief did not give more details.
Meantime, provincial administration spokesman Rizwanullah Adil confirmed the raid, saying that he did not know the reason behind the action.
Neither U.S. military nor Afghan officials in Kabul were available to make comment.
The restive Waigal district and surrounding mountainous areas in east Afghanistan have been the scene of fierce fighting between foreign troops and militants over the past week during which dozens of people including nine U.S. soldiers had been killed.
